Playing Golf at Bexleyheath for Over 100 Years

Bexleyheath Golf Club celebrated its Centenary in 2009 and is very proud of golf being played on the course for over 103 years. Just like our infamous hills, the Club has had its ups and downs over the years and the coming years will be important in securing the next 100 years of golf at the Club. Below is snapshot of the Club’s foundation:
The earliest recollection of the Club is in 1907 when a group of men came together to play golf on a piece of ground rented from the owner of "The Mount". Sheep grazed on the land to keep the grass down and the members themselves gave their time in keeping the greens in a reasonable playing condition. They also erected a small hut for their personal use. The course then was over seven holes with a bogey of 20 (this included two twos!). In 1908 a caddie's fee was 1½d and members recorded their lost balls together with the make and number of cuts on them. When found, the balls were returned to the player on payment of 3d.
Under a small heading "Golf" (dated 15th October, 1909) the Bexleyheath Observer reported ‘We understand that a nine hole Golf Course has been made on land adjoining 'The Mount'. The Links comprise about 27 acres of undulating land suitable for a delightful sporting course and should prove a distinct acquisition to the district. Applications for membership already received are most encouraging’. Then on 31 December 1909 the Bexleyheath Observer reported that “The following appeared in a recent issue of the Sporting Life: ‘London is fast becoming the hub of the Golfing Universe. St Andrews, we must of course admit, is the Mecca of the game. Edinburgh rests in the midst of perfect golfing country. Glasgow is surrounded by courses of first class quality; and London must now be bracketed with these great golfing centres. Metropolitan courses are springing up like the proverbial mushroom. We now have to record the formation of yet another course within a few miles of the heart of busy London. This new course is at Bexleyheath and although really in existence some months ago, has only now been put into thorough playing order. The course is situated within a mile of Bexleyheath and Bexley stations and mid-way between Blackheath and Barnehurst. To those desirous of a really good day’s golf on a very fine sporting green, a visit should be paid to Bexleyheath'.
The 1909 Club

We are proud to be part of the 1909 Club and our members have enjoyed playing at different participating Clubs, including Walmer & Kingsdown, Sheerness and Royal Latem in Belgium.
The 1909 Club was established in 2008 by an association of golf clubs celebrating their centenary in 2009. The 1909 Club’s objective is to afford the membership of all participating golf clubs courtesy of each others courses from 2009 onwards. Participating clubs include Cowes, Isle of Wight, Lydney, Scotland and for those more adventurous - the Valley Country Club, Sugarloaf, USA.
At a meeting held at Rushcliffe Golf Club on April 24th 2008 a ‘Code Of Practice’ was adopted to apply to all participating golf clubs. This code outlines the criteria for membership and required procedures to enquire about the availability and booking of tee times for visiting members. Please click on the file below for information on participating clubs. It should be stressed that all enquiries must be made through the respective Club secretaries and not by personal contact.
